Oswald Chambers – Prayer

“If we rely on the Holy Spirit, we shall find that our prayers become more and more inarticulate; and when they are inarticulate, reverence grows deeper and deeper.”

“Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.”
Romans 8:26 (ESV)
Prayer is just like our Christian walk. There are different levels of prayer. There are different stages of maturity in prayer. There are different stages in our Christian walk.
I believe that prayer and intercession are different. Prayer is an act of will inspired by the grace of God. Intercession is the Holy Ghost flowing through us. Maybe we could say that prayer and intercession have different operations but are still on the same team.
A child may pray, “God, please bless my father and mother,” and God will honor that. A well-seasoned Christian will enter into the Presence of God and things will happen in the heavenlies that he cannot see but knows in faith that the Lord is doing something powerful. Prayer goes from words to wordless wonder.
Or else we could say that over time (as we take up our cross and die daily) words (prayer) progresses to deep and powerful wordlessness and timelessness (intercession).
In my life, when the Holy Ghost Fire falls, things happen: a positive change in my personal life (i.e., deliverance from a demon) and/or something happens in the heavenlies (a Satanic stronghold taken down).
Daniel 10:12-13: “Then said he unto me, Fear not, Daniel: for from the first day that thou didst set thine heart to understand, and to chasten thyself before thy God, thy words were heard, and I am come for thy words. But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me one and twenty days: but, lo, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me; and I remained there with the kings of Persia.”
Daniel 10:20: “Then said he, Knowest thou wherefore I come unto thee? and now will I return to fight with the prince of Persia: and when I am gone forth, lo, the prince of Grecia shall come.”
What we are seeing in these verses in the Book of Daniel is the eventual passing of the Persian Empire and the ushering in of the Greek/Macedonian Empire through Alexander the Great. The Lord is the author of history and He is the great powerbroker when it comes to the rise and fall of empires. I have always believed that one of the reasons that the Lord did away with the Persian Empire and raised up the Greek Empire was that He wanted the New Testament to be written in Greek. Why? Maybe the Greek language is an easier language to learn and a better carrier of the Gospel message than the Persian language. It could also be a fulfilling of Noah’s prophecy concerning his three sons: Japheth would be enlarged: Genesis 9:27: “God shall enlarge Japheth, and he shall dwell in the tents of Shem; and Canaan shall be his servant.”
After the downfall of the Persian Empire, the Greek and Roman Empires came into play. After the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, Israel was dominated by the Roman Empire and was influenced by the Greek language. The sign on the cross, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews”, was written in Hebrew, Latin and Greek. The Greek New Testament is still being taught in Bible schools all over the world. Thank you, Alexander the Great.
The power of intercession. Daniel 10:2: “In those days I Daniel was mourning three full weeks.” Was Daniel mourning the captivity in Babylon? Was he interceding against the captivity in Babylon? Or was he in a state of intercession that he did not fully understand. Eventually, the Lord sent a messenger to give Daniel understanding.
Daniel 10:11: “And he said unto me, O Daniel, a man greatly beloved, understand the words that I speak unto thee, and stand upright: for unto thee am I now sent. And when he had spoken this word unto me, I stood trembling.”
